COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE PDP NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBERS-ELECT RETREAT HELD IN PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE ON JUNE 1, 2015

In view of the fact that in the aftermath of the 2015 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will be playing the role of the opposition at the centre for the first time, the Forum of the PDP Members-elect organised a one-day retreat for its members in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Retreat with the theme “The Role of the Opposition in Facilitating Development and Good Governance” was aimed at helping to shape the quality of governance in the next four years.

The Retreat, which attracted resource persons from other emerging democracies in Africa as well as party leaders and key stakeholders like PDP Governors had as sub-themes, namely: “Strategies for Capacity Strengthening of the PDP as an Opposition Party in the NASS”; “Change Management: From Ruling to Opposition Party: The Ghana Experience”; “Developing Shadow Governance Structures and Processes”, and “Managing Effective Communications by the Opposition”.

At the end of presentations and rich, soul-searching, and bare-all interactive sessions, which dissected challenges facing the PDP as an opposition party in the parliament, the retreat of the Forum of PDP National Assembly Members-elect resolved:

1.To continue holding such retreats and other strategic forums from time to time;

2. To continue to work as a body and speak with one voice at the National Assembly to further the party’s ideologies, interests, and national good;

3. To shun defections and remain in the PDP to revive its political fortunes and give Nigerians better leadership;

4. To provide the nation with a healthy, robust, vigilant, and responsible opposition, to promote democratic good governance, and development;

5. The PDP leadership pledged to work with the Members of the PDP in the National Assembly and give them the maximum support to excel as a vibrant opposition in Parliament

6. The PDP leadership and National Assembly Members emphasized the need for an efficient media management and in this regard will partner with the mainstream media to hold the APC-led government accountable to the people of Nigeria in the management of the country.
